The Poet\u2019s Birthplace<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ux\u00edo Novoneyra\u2019s birthplace, in the village of Parada do Courel, was always a welcoming home open to visitors: friends, neighbours, and curious travellers drawn to discover the mountains of O Courel and meet Ux\u00edo in person.<\/p>

Today, serving as both the headquarters of the Foundation and a living museum, Casa da Fonte<\/i> remains true to its spirit\u2014continuing to be the vibrant hub for gathering, reflection, and cultural vitality that the poet nurtured throughout his life, by and for O Courel.<\/p>

Casa da Fonte<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ux\u00edo Novoneyra was born on 19 January 1930 in the family homestead in Parada, built by his great-grandfather during the Third Carlist War (1872\u20131876). He spent much of his life here\u2014first with his parents, Manuela Neira and Jos\u00e9 Novo, and later, in the 1970s, with his wife Elba Rey and their children, Branca, Ux\u00edo, and Arturo. In 1983, the family relocated to Santiago de Compostela, though they continued to return to the house regularly. <\/p>

Known locally as Casa do Crego or Casa da Fonte, the estate holds significant heritage value as a testament to the traditional rural life of the region, once centered on livestock farming and subsistence agriculture. The complex features a central living quarters arranged around an inner courtyard, surrounded by traditional outbuildings (former stables, a wine cellar, a carpentry workshop, a forge, and a hayloft), as well as a kitchen garden opening out onto ancient chestnut groves. <\/p>

Throughout Ux\u00edo\u2019s lifetime, the house remained an open haven for friends. Painters like Reimundo and Ant\u00f3n Pati\u00f1o, along with poets such as Manuel Mar\u00eda and Mar\u00eda Mari\u00f1o, were frequent visitors, while others\u2014including Carlos Oroza and his partner Carmen Latorre\u2014stayed for extended periods. Their presence left behind a rich treasure of manuscripts and works of art that today form an integral part of the house\u2019s permanent collection. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In accordance with the poet\u2019s last will and testament, leaving his legacy to the land where he was born and lived, the house in Parada stands today as a home for poetry, open to the public and to cultural life.<\/b><\/span><\/p>

Since 2010, the Ux\u00edo Novoneyra Foundation has carried out restoration work to adapt the space for contemporary use, while faithfully preserving the original construction of the floors, masonry walls, pointing, and ceilings across all the buildings that comprise the estate. The property is listed as protected heritage in the General Municipal Plan (PXOM), an initiative backed by the Provincial Council of Lugo (Deputaci\u00f3n de Lugo). <\/p>

Serving as the Foundation\u2019s headquarters, the house is both a living museum and the guardian of the family\u2019s archive<\/a>, library, and growing art collection<\/a>.
