The Foundation Archive
The Uxío Novoneyra Foundation Archive comprises more than 2,000 items of bibliographic, documentary, graphic, and audiovisual heritage. It is organized into two main collections: the Novo and Neira Family Collection and the Uxío Novoneyra Collection.
The bulk of the documents is housed in the physical archive at the Foundation’s headquarters in Parada, with the remainder kept in family residences. It is an active, living archive that we continue to research and expand through the acquisition and donation of new materials.
A substantial portion of these records has been digitized and made accessible through the Galiciana – Digital Archive of Galicia repository and the PARES Portal of the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Furthermore, the archive provides consultation services for the research community.
Novo and Neira Family Collection
This collection focuses on the history of Casa da Fonte—Uxío’s birthplace in Parada do Courel and the current headquarters of the Foundation—and his ancestral line, the Neyra e Pol family lineage.
These records hold exceptional historical value as a window into the traditional Galician rural gentry (fidalguía) in the mountains, featuring documents dating back to the 16th century, including land-lease contracts (foros), lawsuits, and bills of sale. It offers a unique window into daily mountain life throughout history.
Uxío Novoneyra Archive
The core of the archive is housed within this collection, comprising all documentation related to Uxío Novoneyra—both his own original creations (poems, manuscripts, drawings) and archival materials from fellow writers and artists who were part of his life.
MARÍA MARIÑO
Described by Uxío Novoneyra as the “dynamiter of language” (dinamiteira da fala), María Mariño was a poet from Noia. They became neighbours in the village of Parada when María relocated there with her husband, who was assigned as the state schoolteacher at the local schoolhouse. It was Novoneyra who encouraged her to write and publish her poetry in Galician. The Foundation’s collection preserves her original manuscript poems, correspondence, and portrait sketches of the poet.
CARLOS OROZA
One of Uxío’s closest friends, Carlos Oroza was an oral poet and a prominent figure of the Café Gijón bohemian circle. They met in Madrid at the iconic café while Uxío was working for Spanish National Radio and Television (RTVE). They sustained a deep friendship and an enduring creative dialogue for decades. Carlos Oroza visited Uxío Novoneyra regularly and stayed for extended periods at the Parada homestead. The archive holds extensive documentation on Oroza, including poems, letters, and rich photographic and graphic material.
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
The collection also houses materials from other creative figures close to Uxío, notably the photographic collections of Federico García Cabezón, Emilio Araúxo, and Xan G. Muras.
