What are the Care Readings?

Lecturas de Coidado (Care Readings) is an initiative launched in January 2024 with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Galician Health Service (SERGAS). The project approaches reading as a vital tool for community care—with a particular focus on vulnerable groups—advocating for close, attentive reading as a practice of deep listening, critical thought, and resistance against inequality and violence.

The gathering takes place at the Conxo Psychiatric Hospital in Santiago de Compostela, a site steeped in history and collective memory. It brings together authors, cultural mediators, healthcare professionals, librarians, and the general public. Its programme combines bibliotherapy book clubs, panel discussions, poetry recitals, performances, and guided walks exploring both the tangible and intangible heritage of the hospital grounds.

Prominent literary voices participating in Lecturas de Coidado have included Belén Gopegui, Chus Pato, Yolanda Castaño, Manuel Rivas, María Sánchez, Antón Lopo, and Jaume Coll Mariné, among others. It is an invitation to read collectively, exchange knowledge, and reimagine literature as a space for care, human connection, and social transformation.
