Garden & Chestnut Groves

The Garden & Chestnut Groves

Over 2,000 m² of gardens surround Casa da Fonte, creating a natural haven of apple, walnut, and cherry trees, rosebushes, bay laurels, rowans (carnabudos), and many other native species.

This is the setting for the Dos Eidos Festival (Festival dos Eidos), held every August to bring together poetry, music, dance, and nature.

The grounds offer sweeping, privileged views of the Courel mountains, especially from the traditional covered balcony (solaina), which looks out toward A Pinza and A Lomba.

A footpath leads from the garden directly into the Souto da Rubial—the poet’s own chestnut grove—a clearing in the lush Courel woodland home to dozens of centuries-old chestnut trees. This woodland grove is officially listed in the Government of Galicia’s Catalogue of Singular Trees Catálogo de árbores senlleiras da Xunta de Galicia.

Gadañarei coma nas grandes rogadas do Vrao
tralos gadañeiros sucesivos

lambendo con brío os calcaños de diante.
Ir e vir a gadaña canta a ritmo binario

sobre un fondo de roxe ou río contino.
